My Traditions

Many traditions are not only passed down through family but also through whole countries. These traditions make the country what it is. Traditions are one of the things that happen in countries that can make them say, “Hey, we do this, so that means we’re part of the country.”One of my favorite place is the Netherlands where they have many traditions.

One of traditions in my family is Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas is like a Dutch Santa, he lives in Spain and every Christmas he comes over to Holland and gives us gifts. He workswith people called Zwarte Pieten who help him with presents. Another thing we do is put our glogs, wooden shoes, by the fire with carrots for Sinterklaas’s horse. The Piets come down the chimney and put candies in the shoes.

This was a very old tradition because it has been going on for a very long time. My family also celebrates Christmas with Santa so we get more stuff. Also we weren’t able to have a star so we instead put a Sinterklaas doll on top of our tree. Like most American families, we like to decorate the tree with many things. For instance we put up Russian dolls up, Dutch fishes, little wreaths, glass balls, and a whole lot of little decorations. We also use table decorations that we put all over the counters and tables.

We usually go to one of our relatives in another state or country to celebrate Christmas with them. Then we come home and sometimes invite someone over for Christmas dinner. In the morning we run down stairs and open our stockings and empty our glogs(they are usually filled with candy, some games, or fruit). We then hand out presents to each other while munching on the candy. Then we just spend some family time together and make a big breakfast. My brother and I run up stairs and try out our new things. At night we make a cozy fire and hot chocolate. Then we sit by the fire and drink the chocolate. I am going to pass this to my kids because it was fun for me, it should be fun for them.

My favorite place was the Netherlands. It was my favorite place because it had wonder food that i liked and it had a great school and amusement parks. I also like going through all the windmills and small towns. My favorite thing was Madurodam.

I liked it because it was all of Holland but in minature and i would pretend to be a big monster in a city. Also by my house was a fish store and a bakery. I like the fish store because they sold raw herring. They ate it by holding up by the tail, so did I.

I hope to go back one day, untill then i'm okay here in Cyprus.
